How to burn candles
1. Maximise your candles burn time* by letting the candle wax melt right to the edge of the jar before you blow it out
It may take a couple of hours to achieve (depending on the candle and conditions). But if you allow this, you will maximise the value-for-money from your candle.
If you allow a full layer of wax to melt you'll avoid a crater/tunnel forming, which will grow deeper with each use. The wick may become difficult to light and you’ll be left with unmelted wax on the sides of the jar reducing the burn time from the candle.
So it’s best to light a candle only if you’re going to be around to enjoy it for a couple of hours.
Following this advice will help you maximise the life of your candle, and leave a nice flat surface and clean jar sides after each use. And, yes, this does mean you probably need to burn your candle for longer than you normally would to maximise its life and the enjoyment you get from it.
2. Trim the wick
For your second and subsequent burns, you may need to trim the wick. This will be necessary if you’re left with a long burnt wick and/or mushrooming at the top of the wick after the previous burn. Trimming the wick will give you a cleaner, brighter burn and avoid smoky stains that sometimes end up on the jar walls. Keep the wick trimmed to about 5mm for our wicks. A thinner wick on other candles can be trimmed to 5-8mm.
3. Safety
-
Burn candles within sight, on a level and fire-resistant surface and away from anything that can catch fire.
-
Keep away from drafts and vibrations.
-
Keep out of reach of children and pets.
-
Do not burn the candle for more than 4 hours at a time.
-
Stop using the candle when the wax is down to the last 6-10mm at the bottom of the jar.
4. Other tips
Between uses, use the lid to prevent dust buildup on the candle. If there is some dust or debris on the candle you want to remove, use some sticky tape to remove it when the candle wax has cooled and solidified.
* ‘burn time' is the number of hours your candle burns - this is what you want maximised to get good value for money from your candle
